FunnyStorm Successfully Files Patent for Location-Based In-Game Activity Expansion System

FunnyStorm Co., Ltd. (CEO: Bobby Yu) has announced the successful patent filing of its new technology titled “System and Method for Expanding In-Game Activity Area Based on Location, and Recording Medium Storing the Program for Executing the Method” (Application No. 10-2024-0044132).

This patented system is designed for location-based game environments and enables players to expand their activity areas beyond their current GPS position. The system, method, and executable program stored on a recording medium allow users to enjoy a broader game world based on their real-world location, even without physically moving.

Key features include a combination of factors such as:

  • Player level,
  • Specific in-game items,
  • Unlocked content, etc.

These factors work together to dynamically expand the user’s playable area, allowing players to experience more content from their current location—addressing one of the main limitations of traditional location-based games: geographical monotony.

Moreover, gameplay elements acquired or achieved in real time contribute directly to activity expansion, enabling personalized gameplay styles and a wide variety of progression paths unique to each player.

FunnyStorm plans to implement this technology first in its upcoming title Dragon Raid, which is currently under development.

Bobby Yu, CEO of FunnyStorm, stated, “As competition in the mobile gaming market intensifies, we’ve been working to ensure players can enjoy our games in more flexible and diverse ways. This patent reflects the result of that effort.”

He added, “By implementing an in-game activity expansion system, we aim to deliver new forms of entertainment that blur the line between the game and the real world. We will continue developing cutting-edge technologies that contribute to more engaging and enjoyable gaming experiences.”
