South Korean game studio FunnyStorm has officially filed a domestic patent (Application No. 10-2024-0034085) for a “System and Method for Spatial Movement within a Game Environment,” which enables players to teleport between in-game locations using real-world positional and environmental data.
This patented system allows players to:
Store specific in-game locations as portals
Teleport to these portals from anywhere in the world, based on live GPS, weather, and time data
Trigger events at the saved portal location when the real-world environmental conditions align
For example, if a player previously saved a specific location as a portal, and a new in-game event activates there, the player can instantly move to that location from anywhere, using the teleportation system.
Notable features include:
Integration of real-time weather, temperature, and time of day into gameplay
Environment-specific dragons or events appear depending on current physical conditions (e.g., foggy dragons at dawn, fire dragons on hot days)
Increased immersion and realism by blending virtual and physical spaces
CEO Bobby Yu (Yu Choong-Gil) commented:
“This patent brings us one step closer to merging reality and fantasy in a seamless way. It will power the next evolution in how players move, interact, and experience our game worlds.”
The technology is planned to be implemented in FunnyStorm’s upcoming mobile RPG, Dragon Raid, which is designed as a next-gen location-based adventure title for global markets.
