South Korean game developer FunnyStorm has filed a new patent (Application No. 10-2024-0044132) for a “System and Method for Expanding In-Game Activity Areas Based on Player Location.” This innovation allows players in location-based mobile games to access broader gameplay zones without requiring physical relocation.
The patented system determines each player’s activity radius dynamically based on multiple in-game factors, such as:
Player level
Special items
Unlocked content or quest progress
By combining these variables, the system enables players to expand their active gameplay area even while remaining in the same real-world location. This approach enhances accessibility and content availability, allowing for deeper engagement regardless of physical mobility.
Key innovation:
Activity radius adapts in real time to individual progress
Enables unique growth paths for each user
Encourages content-rich gameplay even in static environments
FunnyStorm plans to integrate this patented system into its upcoming location-based RPG Dragon Raid, currently in development and targeting a global release.
CEO Bobby Yu (Yu Choong-Gil) commented:
“This patent reflects our vision to create freer, more diverse ways for players to engage with games. We’re committed to leading the future of location-based mobile games through continuous innovation.”
